HOW CAN I RECOGNISE MALLORCA ACNE?

This unpleasant skin reaction usually occurs in the spring, a few days after the first intense sun exposure of the year, or at the beginning of a holiday in a warm climate. This is why Mallorca acne is also referred to as «spring acne» (the medical term is acne aestivalis). It is the most common sunlight-related skin disease in Central Europe. The skin can even develop Mallorca acne in reaction to sun exposure in glass-enclosed rooms, as UVA light can also trigger the disorder. Mallorca acne can be identified by the following symptoms:

• WHAT: Itching, acne-like, small tubercles / blisters / papules / pustules as well as redness / inflammation
• WHERE: Mainly on parts of the body that are exposed to the sun: face, upper arms, shoulders, chest, back
• WHEN: At times when the skin has not been used to the sun, usually starts in the spring, peaks in summer, spontaneously subsides in autumn
• HOW: Usually a reaction to sunscreen combined with sunlight
• WHO: mostly young people, in particular women, suffer from Mallorca acne

CAUSES OF MALLORCA ACNE.

The scientific theory is as follows: When UV rays and the ingredients in greasy sunscreens or the sebum come in contact with one another, this can lead to irritating skin reactions. But why? UV radiation causes free radicals to form in the skin. These very easily bind to other substances such as fats, for example. As a result, the combination of the greasy components in sunscreen and free radicals can have an inflammatory effect on the skin, in particular where hair follicles grow (due to clogged pores).

SUN ALLERGY OR PRICKLY HEAT?

Mallorca acne and other sunlight-related skin reactions are also collectively referred to as a «sun allergy» in colloquial speech. However, in the case of Mallorca acne, it is the specific combination of fats and emulsifiers in cosmetics, sunscreen and the body's own sebum and sweat with free radicals that is literally the «irritating factor». If your skin repeatedly reacts to the combination of sunscreen and sunlight, it may even be beneficial to have a doctor perform an allergy test – perhaps you are allergic to a specific substance.

A minor skin reaction to sun and sweat can result in what's referred to as prickly heat. In this case, it's best to avoid creams and lotions and to thoroughly cleanse the affected areas of the skin.

ACNE ON HOLIDAY - NOW WHAT?

On day two of your long-awaited beach holiday in Mallorca (or wherever else) you suddenly develop pustules and blisters on your face. How annoying! Unfortunately, you should avoid direct sun exposure so that it doesn't get any worse. The skin usually gets accustomed to the sun's radiation over the course of the summer and the symptoms will disappear on their own after one to two weeks. However, if the skin irritation is severe and painful, you should consult a chemist or even a dermatologist, as some cases may require drug therapy. Otherwise – less is more and hang in there!

Like all consumer goods, cosmetics are polluting the environment. Cardboard and plastic packaging, cotton pads and ingredients such as oils, waxes and other substances from daily skincare wind up in the trash and waste water. In this article, we take a close look at what initially appears to be an insignificant by-product of skincare products: microscopic plastic particles that act as abrasives and scrubbing agents for cleansers.

CLEANSING WITH PLASTIC.

«Microplastics» are tiny plastic granules that are intended to enhance the cleansing effect of hygiene products such as exfoliating scrubs, shower gels and toothpaste. Manufacturers like granules because they are inexpensive and cannot damage the skin. As much as 10% of an exfoliating scrub or gel toothpaste consists of microscopic plastic globules. The beads can be found on the list of ingredients under polyethylene*. The microbeads are intended for mechanical cleansing – although this can be achieved just as well with biodegradable materials such as the ones found in natural cosmetics containing ground kernels.

EASY ON THE EYE.

It makes sense that the plastic granules are nice and soft and therefore can't scratch the skin. But is this enough for adequate exfoliation? No. The exfoliation is only superficial as the particles are too soft and suspended in gel, making them unable to truly polish the skin. At best, the skin gets a gentle massage, but the granules hardly have a real effect. However, the visual effect in the tube induces consumers to buy it. Let's be honest: who can resist a light-blue gel with silver beads? It makes you want to touch it, smell it, spread it on your face! There wouldn't be any issues with the attractive exfoliating scrubs if it weren't for the plastic getting into the environment through waste water. Thanks to environmental cycles, researchers are increasingly finding them swimming in tap water, milk and honey – and this has devastating consequences.

TINY POLLUTERS.

Did you know? Plastic microbeads are currently the fastest growing marine pollutants. Researchers have found that on average nearly 100,000 plastic beads are flushed down the drain with every facial cleanse. One tube of exfoliating scrub contains up to three million plastic beads that will all have the same fate: The little troublemakers cannot be completely filtered out in water treatment plants and therefore wind up in rivers and lakes and are accumulating in oceans. Even the plastic waste that is filtered out ends up as sewage sludge for fertilising fields and makes its way into the atmosphere as microscopic dust. Therefore it is not surprising that under a microscope, plastic can even be found in honey.

FILTHY FISH FOOD.

In the ocean, small fish, mussels and plankton mistake these plastic particles for food. Microplastics readily absorb other harmful substances from the water and these tiny, toxic bombs then make their way into animals, thus entering the food chain, at the top of which are humans. While it may sound grotesque, we might as well eat the exfoliating scrub right out of the tube.

MANUFACTURERS REACT.

Well-known cosmetics manufacturers are reacting to the latest findings. They have announced that toothpaste and other products will no longer contain microbeads in future. Hopefully they will keep their promises. Until then, we recommend using alternatives as the beads do more harm than good.

HOW CAN SKIN CARE BE HARMFUL?

It is well known that a radiant complexion requires regular facial cleansing and skin care. The beauty industry offers us tons of cosmetics products with which to achieve this. But at what point is it overkill? In most cases, the skin itself tells us when it's had enough and reacts with visible «perioral dermatitis», a form of contact dermatitis and one of the most common skin diseases. This unsightly skin reaction is most likely due to «overdoing it» with cosmetic products. Constant cleansing (in particular with surfactants) and applying of creams overmoisturises the skin. This makes the corneal layer swell up, causing an imbalance in the skin's natural barrier function and in turn allowing the skin to lose too much moisture.

DRY - MOIST - DRY...

The skin feels dry, which the affected person tries to prevent by applying more cream, which only worsens the symptoms and triggers a vicious cycle. Excess skin care further damages the skin and ultimately causes inflammation.

HOW DO I RECOGNISE «PERIORAL DERMATITIS»?

Those who suffer from perioral dermatitis (mostly women aged 16 to 45) will exhibit the following symptoms:

• Symptoms: small areas of redness, burning, pain, sometimes itching, often unpleasant dryness with minor desquamation, rarely also oozing
• Where? Tubercles, pustules or small spots, most often around the mouth (therefore also called «red mouth»); dermatitis can also develop on the nostrils and around the eyes. The rash around the mouth typically exhibits a narrow border around the lips which is not affected by the rash.

SHOULD I SEE A DERMATOLOGIST?

It is usually necessary to make an appointment with a dermatologist. The doctor will recommend that the patient immediately stops using all skin care products to allow the skin to regenerate. This is particularly difficult for women, being unable to cover up conspicuous facial irritations with make-up. However, it is the only way to bring about a sustained improvement - albeit not right away. The condition may worsen at first but in most cases the inflammation gradually disappears in four to six weeks.

THE NO-COSMETICS DIET...

Once the dermatologist has prescribed the appropriate treatment, the stressed skin must be suitably nourished - or not, in this case! Unfortunately, all previously used cosmetics products must be avoided. First and foremost, the skin needs a complete rest from all skin care creams and cleansers - in other words, NO products. For many women, this means a complete change in habits; it makes perfect sense that you would want to moisturise extremely dry areas of skin with a greasy cream - but this is exactly what will trigger the vicious cycle of overtreated skin. For the time being, the face should only be cleansed with water, nothing else.

AND THEN MORE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS? YES, BUT THE RIGHT ONES.

Once the dermatitis has subsided, a minimalist skin care ritual should be put in place. Our «Moisturizing» is just the thing. APPEALING OR APPALLING?

The goal of the cosmetics industry is to create products that are as long-lasting, fragrant and pleasant to the touch as possible. However, this requires a lot of additives that don't benefit the health of your skin. Unproblematic skin usually tolerates these kinds of additives well – but an increasing number of people are reacting badly to fragrances and preservatives. The consequences are inflammation of the skin and irritations. What good is the most amazing cream if it causes itching, eczema and rashes? Precious little! Some chemicals in cosmetics can trigger painful reactions.

YOUR SKIN IS RED AND BURNING - NOW WHAT?

Have you experienced this? You bought a new cleansing gel and nourishing cream and have been following the skin care plan for a few days. On the third evening, your skin is burning, red and tiny pustules have formed. These are typical symptoms of dermatitis, but what should you do? The following tips will help you better assess the reaction:

IRRITANT CONTACT DERMATITIS:

If cells are attacked by caustic chemicals, this will generally cause a skin irritation that can manifest itself as follows: 

• Symptoms: reddened skin, wet sores, chapped and glassy complexion, burning, stabbing pain, itching
• Where do they occur? Local reaction in areas where the body has come into contact with the substance
• When do they occur? A few minutes or no more than a few hours after the initial contact with the substance
• What can I do? Immediately stop using the irritating skin care product, read the list of ingredients and potentially compare it to other products. If the symptoms do not improve, contact a pharmacy or dermatologist. Apply as few cosmetic products as possible while the skin is still irritated. Once the irritation has healed, it is best to switch to a gentle skin care product with as few ingredients as possible (no preservatives, perfume, alcohol, surfactants).

ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS:

An allergy surfaces when the immune system develops antibodies in order to fight the bothersome chemicals.  

• Symptoms: severe itching, redness, clearly defined areas of inflammation, blisters and cysts, fever
• Where do they occur? The strongest reaction is at the contact site, but because antibodies are formed the allergic reaction also spreads
• When do they occur? Usually only after repeated contact. Symptoms appear within 24 to 72 hours because the body needs time to form antibodies
• What can I do? Immediately stop using all skin care products, read the list of ingredients and potentially compare them to other products in order to determine the allergen. If the allergic reaction is severe, visit a dermatologist immediately and bring the products you used. Once your skin is healthy again, it is best to switch to a skin care product that has as few ingredients as possible (no preservatives, perfume, alcohol, surfactants).

If the symptoms are severe and do not disappear on their own, you should definitely visit a dermatologist. If you want a preliminary opinion before you make an appointment with your doctor, you can show the irritation to a chemist at a pharmacy.

It is therefore important to listen to your body and not expect too much from it. As a detox beginner, reading books or consulting a therapist or doctor can be tremendously helpful. If you are successful with your chosen detox, you can simply repeat the same purification process each year. However, a detox can definitely also be the trigger for a healthier lifestyle. And not just once a year either!

Combination skin differs from other skin types in that it is neither completely dry, nor is it normally moist or oily and shiny. Instead, it is a combination of normal and oily skin or dry and oily skin in different areas of the face. In the cosmetics industry this is referred to as combination skin, which usually consists of two zones: the «T-zone» and the «periphery». The «T-zone» consists of the forehead, nose and chin areas, which together make the shape of a T. The cheeks form the periphery of the face.

TREATING THE OILY T-ZONE.

The density of sebum-producing sebaceous glands is highest in the T-zone, which is why greasy shine and enlarged pores typically occur in this area. Oily skin also tends to develop blemishes, such as spots and blackheads, since the pores become blocked with excess sebum. A good cleansing and skin care routine that regulates sebum production is therefore ideal for this area of the skin.

TREATING THE NORMAL OR DRY PERIPHERY.

The periphery of combination skin is usually normal or dry and raw around the facial contours. Dry skin tends to be flaky, red and itchy. Often the pores in this area of skin are less visible; however, fine lines and wrinkles are more pronounced. The overly sensitive periphery therefore requires gentle cleansing and nourishment with moisture-preserving, smoothing and calming ingredients.

FACIAL CARE WITH FILSUISSE FOR COMBINATION SKIN.

The question as to which of our FilSuisse wipes are suitable for combination skin is therefore justified. Our «Skin Clear» wipes are particularly suitable for the T-zone. WHAT ARE CREAMS GOOD FOR?

Creams are good for protecting the skin against UV rays and acting as a barrier against environmental damage caused by fine particles or cold, etc. We therefore always recommend boosting your skin's natural barrier function throughout the day. But how do skin care creams and their active ingredients work? Are they really absorbed by the skin?

ALL ACTIVE INGREDIENTS ARE ABSORBED INTO THE SKIN – IF ONLY!

For over 100 years, people have been searching for a cream that is truly «absorbed». The term implies that the cream feeds and nourishes dry skin. But in reality, there is not much trace of the cream after a short time. Does this mean that the cream and all its active ingredients are completely absorbed by the skin? People who use creams want the valuable active ingredients to go where they are needed and where the skin can get the most benefit. Wouldn't that be great? Unfortunately, the reality is somewhat different.

REALITY: GREASY FILM.

Unfortunately, skin care creams are barely absorbed by the skin, and simply sit on the surface. Now, you might be thinking «but after using the cream, my skin looks and feels soft and hydrated.» All you are feeling, however, is the layer of cream on top of your skin. What actually happens is that the water content of the cream evaporates relatively quickly, leaving little trace on your skin. In contrast, the fat content of the cream simply sits on top of the skin and is washed away after showering or washing your hands. Residue may also disrupt the natural regeneration of the skin. It is therefore the texture of the cream that we perceive as being soft and hydrated – not the skin. So, where do the active ingredients end up?

ONLY SUPERFICIAL SKIN CARE.

Unfortunately, traditional cosmetic creams generally provide short-term effects rather than long-lasting results. It is therefore virtually impossible for creams to penetrate deep into the skin. The role of the skin's outer layer is primarily to protect the body against bacteria, microbes and other environmental stress. It is therefore not very good at absorbing substances – quite the opposite in fact: the cream's active ingredients simply sit on the dead skin cells in a greasy film. Very little cream actually penetrates deeper into the skin. And some of what is absorbed by the skin actually includes undesirable additives that are often found in many creams (preservatives, emulsifying agents, perfume, colouring, etc.)

SO WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE CARE OF MY SKIN?

Understandably, you may ask yourself «why do I even bother using a cream?» As mentioned at the beginning of this blog, using creams is definitely worthwhile, especially when it comes to protecting your skin against UV rays and environmental damage caused by fine particles and cold temperatures, etc.

In the morning, it is important that you support your skin's barrier function and protect yourself against premature aging. To achieve this effect, we recommend using a light day cream with UV protection.

SOFT SKIN COATED IN PLASTIC.

Who doesn't want silky soft skin? How about coating your skin in plastic to achieve it? Absurd, isn't it? But in reality, most creams contain silicones, i.e. plastic, and the skin really does feel smoother after application as silicone fills in the wrinkles. We are sometimes asked if FilSuisse also protects against UV rays. No, FilSuisse does not contain a sunscreen. Therefore, especially in summer, you must be sure to protect your skin with the right sunscreen. Take expert advice to ensure that you use the correct product to suit your skin type and your needs. Of course, it also depends on whether you're holidaying in the Caribbean, or simply travelling to work on a sunny day. When it comes to sun creams and skin creams in general, our advice is to avoid parabens and silicone where possible. Products should also ideally be free from allergens and contain natural active ingredients. Even fragrances are not really needed for sunning yourself.

GOLDEN TAN OR ARISTOCRATIC PALLOR?

While most Asian people desire an «aristocratic pallor», we in the West prefer to strive for a healthy holiday tan. We see things differently in our culture. By our standards, a sun-kissed face is considered to be dynamic and relaxed – and even that is dependent on the current fashion. Fortunately, the red, sunburnt look is never in demand! :-)

WE LOVE SUN CREAM!

We at FilSuisse are not really fans of skin creams, since these oily and greasy active substance transporters block the pores and bring many unnecessary substances to the skin along with the active ingredients. However, there is no argument when it comes to sunscreen. The skin must be protected externally and should be systematically sealed against UV rays. As yet, no alternatives to creams have been invented for the purposes of sun protection. People used to talk about getting a «healthy tan», but tanning is only «healthy», if it happens easily and you haven't spent too much time in the sun. Sad, but true.

WHAT'S THE BEACH DOING ON MY FACE?

Here's a typical holiday scenario: you cover yourself with sun cream in the morning and spend a wonderful day at the beach. What happens in the evening? You find you've got half the beach stuck to the remnants of the protective cream film: dirt, sand, sea salt, bugs, sweat - and is that a bit of ice-cream on top? OK, so maybe that's an exaggeration, but by the time you have children, sticky substances are also part of the mix. That's why thorough cleansing is so important after a day covered in sunblock.

PORE-DEEP CLEANSING – A BEAUTIFUL TAN.

And so there's nothing nicer, after a day at the beach, than to take a cool shower and give your face a thorough cleanse! First splash your face with cold water to cool it down a bit, and then cleanse with a FilSuisse wipe. This thoroughly removes all traces of sunscreen, sweat and other beach residue from the pores and supplies a high concentration of active ingredients to your skin.

Many people think that you won't tan if you use sunscreen. This is not true! It may take a bit longer, but the same applies for tanning as for sports training or losing weight: the slower, the better. A slow tan also lasts longer.

AFTER SUN?

After a day by the sea, sunscreen users are usually advised to apply an «after-sun» product. After-sun lotions have a high alcohol and water content and are designed to supply the skin with the cooling and moisture it needs. However, that «cool» feeling is only due to the evaporation effect of the alcohol. Lotions are creams in a more liquid form, and likewise are not free from oils and a vast amount of unnecessary ingredients (preservatives, fragrances, etc.). What's more, after a day with pore-blocking sun cream and sweat, why would you want to apply yet another lotion to your face? A sun cream seals your skin upwards, but consequently also downwards. So even though the skin has a protective film against UV rays, the sealing effect also prevents the skin from breathing and excreting. This may also lead to blemishes – and using an after-sun lotion can make them even worse! FilSuisse is therefore perfect for cleansing and nourishing your skin in one step, without your skin again becoming hermetically sealed to the outside!

SELF-TANNING LOTIONS.

Tanning from a tube? For the cautious and those who simply prefer the shade, there is a good alternative to sunbathing. Self-tanning lotions react in the topmost skin layer (corneal layer). The tan lasts a few days and is then repelled. To stop your bronzed complexion from becoming blotchy, we recommend gently exfoliating beforehand with FilSuisse. If you have any colour mishaps, a long, warm bath followed by exfoliation will help. Blotches on your fingers from application can be removed with lemon juice.

As the old saying goes, «you can have too much of a good thing». If you don't spend an excessive amount of time roasting in the sun, then you also don't need to take precautions or apply cooling substances to your skin. It's pleasant in the shade, and your skin turns brown and not red! 

However, if you should be unfortunate enough to suffer sunburn, please do not use our wipes until the redness has faded. In these circumstances, even gentle exfoliation would be unpleasant and unhelpful on painful skin. Applying cold, damp cloths or quark to the skin can help with slight sunburn. If in doubt please seek advice from a pharmacist. However, hopefully you'll stay healthy and radiant, and enjoy the sunshine to the full!

FilSuisse consists of fibrils that are 120 times thinner than a hair follicle and is therefore able to "scoop out" the pores, so to speak.  Dirt from the environment, sebum and make-up are removed, as well as superfluous dead skin cells.

According to a recent study, beards are a hotbed for bacteria. The study presents quite lurid details, finding that some male facial hair harbours more bacteria than a toilet! According to the study, this is understandably worrisome and revolting and can lead to skin irritations in the space between hairs. It doesn't take magic to keep your beard clean - as long as you care for it with FilSuisse and your beard isn't longer than 5 mm. After all, we're not a barber!

However, only very few aftershaves actually serve to disinfect, namely those with at least 60% alcohol content. Although alcohol is responsible for making the skin feel fresh, this does not necessarily mean it's germ-free. We recommend using FilSuisse right after shaving. SUN PROTECTION IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST.

My daily skincare regimen includes applying sun protection on a daily basis starting in the spring. Because I want my skin to feel good in the morning too, I use FilSuisse as soon as I get up. Then I apply a bit of sun protection and begin my make-up routine.

One great side effect of this is that by using the gentle FilSuisse peel I tan more evenly from the morning throughout the day.

But when I want to lie in the sun, the gentle sunscreen also serves as a good sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF 30 or SPF 50), which I reapply several times throughout the day in order to stay protected.

This is essential because you want to protect your skin against harmful UV rays. But it also means that in addition to protecting your skin outwardly, it also acts as a sealant. My holiday maintenance routine with FilSuisse

- Applying FilSuisse in the morning allows me to be carefree, ensuring my skin will feel good all day. In the morning I use Moisturizing

- Then I apply sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, at least SPF 30

- I put more on from time to time, especially after going in the water

- After spending some time in the sun, I shower and get ready for the evening

- Before I go to bed, I use Anti-Aging

AN ADDITIONAL TIP FOR OILY SKIN.

If you have somewhat oily skin and tend to get spots, I have a wonderful solution for you.

After you've laid out in the sun, I recommend you use Moisturizing to remove any residual sunscreen as well as dirt and sweat from your skin. Then, before you go to bed, cleanse and maintain your skin with Skin Clear.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER SUN PRODUCTS?

In principle, of course, there's no reason not to use an after sun product. You should choose the one you think is best. I'd apply it right after lying out in the sun, and then I recommend using a FilSuisse product right before you go to bed in order to maintain and cleanse your skin.

I prefer an aloe vera gel over an after sun product because it cools and soothes your skin, and to me it feels better.

THIS RULE APPLIES TO EVERYONE: DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE A SUNBURN!

If you get a sunburn, please do NOT use FilSuisse wipes.

My secret tip in this case as well is to use a gel with a high concentration of aloe vera. This will soothe your skin, and the sunburn will heal more quickly. If you have a serious burn, you should consult a doctor. Once your skin is fully healed you can start using FilSuisse again as usual.

POWERFUL FACTS:

• The ideal time to cleanse your skin is in the evening after you've been in the sun, as sunscreen acts as a sealant to your skin and often leads to skin irritation. Skin cleansing is particularly important here!
• More even tanning, as your skin is free from skin flakes and dirt
• Top up, especially before applying self-tanners. Your skin will tan more evenly and won't appear blotchy.
• Fewer clogged pores, which can lead to skin irritation when you perspire

Today I'm going to tell you about a conversation I had with a friend last week.

First, though, I'd like to note once again that men, especially young men, aren't very conscientious about maintenance.

BUT THE SKIN CAN DO EVEN MORE – IT'S THE «THIRD KIDNEY», FAT PROVIDER AND PERFUMIER.

The functions performed by our kidneys inside the body, are also carried out by our skin in a supporting role. For example, perspiration not only regulates body temperature, but also transports salts and other water-soluble substances, such as medication residues, out of the body. In addition, countless scent glands secrete oil-containing scents and use them to form the body's own, individual aroma. Millions of sebaceous glands, their outlets located in every single hair shaft, secrete their own substance – known as sebum. This «natural skin oil» makes the skin soft and smooth – a wonderful side-effect of waste disposal!

Through every moment of our lives, our skin helps to free us from unnecessary substances and our bodies to purge themselves. This is why the skin is referred to as «the third kidney».

OPEN FOR CLEANSING INGREDIENTS.

Alongside its function as an excretion organ, the skin is also able to absorb substances. This capability is harnessed by medical practitioners, e.g. in the use of medications. For example, the hormones in patches for the treatment of menopausal symptoms are delivered to the bloodstream through the skin. According to this principle, it should also be possible for cosmetic ingredients to reach the deeper skin layers. But in order that the nourishing ingredients can be properly delivered to the skin, its surface must be free from make-up, dirt and impurities. Only then is the skin able to absorb molecules.

BUT – WHAT CAN GET INTO THE SKIN?

Thankfully, not every substance can easily make its way into our bodies through the skin. Otherwise it would be very difficult for us to protect ourselves from invasive and harmful impurities. Molecule size is the factor that determines whether a substance can be absorbed by the skin: the skin's outer layer of skin prevents large molecules from penetrating it, whereas smaller molecules pass through the corneal layer far more easily. 

Previously, the best-known way was through traditional care creams, which are composed of a mixture of fat, water and oil. The problem with this is that the cream consists not only of fat, oil and water, but also contains a substantial proportion of chemical additives, which stabilise the cream and make it smell nice. Yet these ingredients are not good for the skin – quite the opposite! They overload the skin and force it to carry out additional excretion activity, in order to get rid of the unnecessary substances again. They also harbour a considerable allergy risk. On the other hand, the really useful ingredients (between ourselves) make up less than 1%! This is because, even though the skin is capable of absorbing vast quantities of substances, most cosmetics contain hardly any ingredients that actually do the skin any good. 

MAINTAINING THE BALANCE – A FULL-TIME JOB.

By alternately absorbing and secreting, our body achieves a healthy – but wasteful – equilibrium on a daily basis. Alongside countless external influences, the skin is also exposed to the natural ageing process. As it ages, it increasingly loses oil and moisture and is not able adequately to balance out this deficiency without help. The following points are therefore essential for optimum facial care:

1  Cleanse your skin thoroughly of sebum, perspiration, dirt and make-up.

2  With gentle, daily exfoliation you can also remove dead skin cells, etc. Only after these two steps is the skin ready to absorb active ingredients that you may wish to supply to it.

3  Harness the physiological properties of the skin by only supplying it with what it actually needs. This means natural substances where possible, free from preservatives, alcohol, fragrances, emulsifiers, etc.

CASTING.

At our first meeting, I talked to the young people about the product and how to use it. Of course, I couldn't resist offering them a few pearls of motherly wisdom. Things like: «No matter how late you come home (and regardless of your condition), use the wipe and don't forget to brush your teeth.» My kids' ears are probably buzzing right now.

After the first round of casting, the list of participants was set.

THE PRE-SHOOT.

Then it was off for some photos, and that's when the testers really started to become nervous. Getting in front of the camera without any make-up with their problem skin was a particular challenge for the young women in our group.

It's a bit like getting naked – the entire world will see how you look under your make-up. We're not talking about people with a few spots, but rather those whose skin condition above all makes them feel uncomfortable in their own skin and often leaves them feeling insecure as well. It also affects their self-confidence, self-worth and self-love.

WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON?

Mainly the desire to have beautiful, radiant skin free of blemishes. Most of them would be happy if their skin cleared up even a little bit. I had only one wish – I hoped we could help all of them. The results in the first four weeks were unbelievable, but have a look for yourself.

The mood was very laid-back at our first shoot at the Fotokult photo studio in Beckum. Our photographer Andreas was able to put the participants at ease and make their fear of being in front of the camera disappear. This resulted in great photos that all of the participants were very pleased with. After the shoot, we gave everyone a four-week pack of Skin Clear and sent them all home.

WHAT'S HAPPENED SO FAR.

We've followed our young team of volunteers for ten weeks and the results are impressive. It's not just their skin that's improved significantly. What affected me most is the change in the demeanour of the volunteers.

My name is Michaela, and I'm a completely normal woman – okay, there are those who would say I'm not normal, but more on that later. The way in which we combat the ageing process has always been related to the contemporary view of humankind. In today's society, we are surrounded by body culture and the obsession with beauty – and it's no longer restricted to the younger generation. We rejoice in the fact that we become calmer and more mellow with increasing years, and that older people are indeed considered to be wise. On the other hand, we find the decline in physique tragic. The cosmetics industry's magic formula to combat this is: anti-aging! It's a term that has been around since the late 1990s. Yet what does «anti-aging» actually mean?

ANTI-AGING AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE?

The image of the cosy, cake-baking granny belongs in the past. Now we see grey-haired models on advertising hoardings, striking energetic yoga poses or working out on their mountain bikes. Therefore it is no surprise that older people are gradually starting to feel under the same pressure as young people when it comes to their appearance. A fresh, firm complexion is a must, it seems! Yet the reality is different: in old age, the skin is troubled by dryness, wrinkles and age spots. When the first fine lines appear, even the most reluctant cosmetics users (or even their husbands) suddenly become interested in anti-wrinkle products. But isn't prevention better than cure?

ANTI-AGING: WHEN TO START?

Ageing is understood to be the result of a complex interaction of biological processes. The causes may be genetic, but environment and behaviour also play a part. According to the latest research into ageing, the skin begins to age in approximately the 30th year of life: the epidermis becomes thinner and loses fat. The resulting reduction in elasticity leads to slackening and the formation of mimic wrinkles. The body produces less collagen und elastin, two structural proteins which make the skin appear smooth and firm – in other words, young. The skin can also be affected by hyperpigmentation and depigmentation (age spots, see «Whitening»). We cannot halt these natural processes with anti-aging ingredients, but we can slow them down. We therefore recommend that both women and men start using anti-aging measures from the age of about 30.

ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS ON YOUNGER SKIN – A GOOD IDEA OR NOT?

The trend is going so far that anti-aging products are even being made to appeal to young women in their 20s, in the hope of tackling ageing at an early stage. However, it is highly inadvisable to overload young skin with anti-aging substances. Certain ingredients in cosmetics for mature skin may even damage young skin. Nevertheless, age-appropriate cleansing (see our articles on cleansing and make-up removal) and care are essential measures and help to counteract skin ageing. It's good to take precautions, but it must be done properly!

ANTI-AGING STARTS WITH FilSuisse SKINCARE.

It's worth looking them up. You also need to be careful with powders, making sure that pressed powders are oil-free and the product does not have any shimmer particles. Both these ingredients unnecessarily emphasize shine. Matt make-up and transparent loose powder are ideal for making up blemished skin.

We use moisturising creams for the simple reason that until now there has been no easy alternative method of administering active substances to the skin. In other words, there was no other way of getting active substances into the skin. When a particular method has been unchallenged for decades and has emotional associations such as 'luxury' and 'optimum care', both the method and the associated emotions acquire an unquestioned status. WHAT IS A MOISTURISER ANYWAY?

Moisturising cream was invented in 1911 and is now a core product of the beauty industry. In simple terms, a moisturiser is a combination of fat or oil and water. These substances will not remain in a stable mixture without the use of additives. They also have a short shelf life, so additional ingredients – emulsifiers and surfactants – are required to make the moisturiser stable. Preservatives, often antioxidants, are used to prevent bacteria from growing in the water in the product and to prevent sensitive ingredients from decomposing. Fragrances are added mainly to mask the odour that develops as the substances 'age'. The long list of ingredients on a jar of moisturiser usually includes: emulsifiers, stabilisers, preservatives, fragrances, solvents, consistency regulators, etc. The longer the list, the more ends up on your face. But what about the active ingredients? The long list is deceptive, because active substances usually account for less than 1% of the product! When you buy a moisturising cream you are mostly investing in marketing, oil and water and not in active ingredients. This sobering conclusion gives rise to a justified question: Is there a better way of looking after the skin and can you invest money more effectively in active substances?

FACIAL CARE WITHOUT CREAM. HOW DOES IT WORK?

FilSuisse has invented a completely new and simple way of getting active substances into the skin! Highly concentrated active substances in dry form are embedded in microfibril wipes, which eliminates the need for additives. The greasy film that a moisturiser leaves on the skin creates the impression of softness, which many people like, even though it isn't really beneficial to skin health. So the question is whether to use skin care in its purest form with FilSuisse or skin care with FilSuisse in combination with a moisturising cream. There may be a range of arguments in favour of or against the additional use of a cream, depending on individual needs. With FilSuisse Skin Clear, for example, we explicitly recommend not using any other products before or after application. With all other products, we leave the decision up to you.

Parabens are chemical compounds which are often used as preservatives in cosmetics, e.g. in skin creams. Without preservatives, no cream can survive in the warm, humid environment of a bathroom over several days in contact with our fingers. Moulds and bacteria would rapidly form. Preservatives and fragrances in the cream help it to remain fresh – which is actually a good thing. Yet parabens and other artificial preservatives are suspected of causing allergies or even breast cancer. Which automatically begs the question: just how dangerous are these substances, does our skin need preservatives and can we do without them?

ARE PARABENS DANGEROUS?

According to the headlines, parabens are clearly harmful. If we investigate more closely, though, things quickly become confusing as there is still no scientific proof. Consumers are particularly worried about the hormonal effects of parabens. Even though there is no scientific evidence as yet, analogy leads us to conclude that there are significant side effects. Critics also point out that most of us have more than one product with parabens in our bathroom: face cream, shampoo, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, shaving foam etc. often contain dubious ingredients such as parabens – and, after all, we use products like these several times a day! Until now, most of the risks have only ever been tested on rats. The studies show that parabens remain in the body as permanent deposits. Possible side-effects: male infertility, early puberty in girls, etc… – which hardly inspires confidence…

DOES SPENDING MORE MEAN BETTER HEALTH?

Healthy, beautiful skin is something we value highly. The shopper therefore naively continues to put her faith in outward appearance. If the product is expensive and the packaging is lavish, the contents are assumed to be healthy and natural. The fact is that alcohol, fragrance and preservatives do not do anything for the skin. Quite the opposite. The risk of allergy increases with the number of ingredients. So why don't manufacturers just do away with parabens? Quite simply, parabens are cheap to produce and replacing them with natural and more skin-friendly substances is just too expensive. Sadly, customers all too rarely pay much attention to the ingredients in their cosmetics. But don't we all want only the best for ourselves and our skin?

IF IT'S NOT HORMONAL RISKS, IT'S ALLERGIES.

Let's replace the words «paraben-free» with «contains no preservatives». Creams advertised as being paraben-free inevitably use other preservatives instead. Critics do not see any advantage in this since other preservatives are just as harmful. We repeatedly hear the term «methylisothiazolinone» (MIT) in this context. This is a problematic, allergenic and more highly controversial preservative, which has been used increasingly since parabens fell into disrepute. The end result for the critical consumer: one evil is simply replaced by another. So what criteria should we use when we're shopping? The simplest rule of thumb: the fewer the ingredients, the lower the risk to your health.

We are sometimes asked if our products can also be used to remove eye make-up. The answer is yes – you can cleanse the eye area thoroughly and efficiently at the same time as your facial skin (see also the articles on make-up removal and facial cleansing). You only need one FilSuisse facial wipe to do the whole job.

EYES – A SENSITIVE ISSUE.

To remove eye-make-up, stretch a corner of the wipe over your index and middle finger and gently wipe from the outer to the inner corner of the eye over the upper and lower lid. Don't press too hard and don't rush. Apply only very light pressure, and never rub! This is because the skin around the eye is fine und delicate, which makes the eye area very sensitive. Once the eyeshadow and eyeliner are removed, pay careful attention to the eyelashes as makeup accumulates in the spaces between the lashes.

REMOVING MASCARA.

Mascara residue in the lashes can dry out the fine hairs and make them more likely to break. And they take a long time to grow back. It's therefore important to wipe the eyelashes using a downward and outward movement. This removes the mascara optimally without irritating the skin too much. Finally, remove all remaining traces of makeup remaining below the eyes.

REMOVING WATERPROOF MASCARA – A TOUGH JOB.

To remove a really stubborn waterproof mascara, you may need to resort to a tried-and-tested, economical home remedy. Put a few drops of oil on a cotton wool pad. Wipe down over closed eyes a few times to dissolve the mascara. Then carefully go over them again with the FilSuisse wipe. Even if you reach for your usual eye make-up remover, try this test: go back over the area with a FilSuisse wipe. You'll be amazed at what you'll see left on the wipe!

In addition, excess dead skin particles are not removed and they block the way for active ingredients. We therefore recommend using a more professional cleanser once a day.

Forget everything that turns the cleansing process into a science. Too many cleansing products with unnecessary ingredients can even bring about the opposite of beautiful skin: itching, redness and dry skin. The fact is, the main causes of irritated, overstressed skin are facial cleansers and cosmetic products! The likelihood of developing skin irritation increases with the number of problematic ingredients. Surfactants in facial cleansers draw out the skin's natural oils, emulsifiers destroy the lipid structure, and fragrances and preservatives can cause allergic reactions. So we have a dilemma: how much hygiene is actually good for the skin?

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS THE PERFECT FACIAL CLEANSER?

Allow us to summarise. The effectiveness of conventional cosmetics and skin care products largely depends on the ingredients used in the product and how the active ingredients are supplied to the skin. Researchers refer to this as the «delivery mechanism» or «mode of administration», or in other words the way and form in which nourishing substances are applied to and into the skin.

Pills, creams and injections are conventional, well-known methods for the transportation of active ingredients. However, pharmacologists and dermatologists are desperately searching for new methods of transport, as pills, injections and creams also have their drawbacks. In terms of method, a cream is a cream regardless of the active ingredients in it. It is applied to the skin, which does absorb some of it, and claims to have a promising short- or long-term effect. However, due to their physical composition, creams contain far more excipients than active ingredients.

STARTING MATERIALS IN THE PRODUCTION OF CREAMS.

Creams have a complex physical structure that mainly combines the structures of emulsions and gels. Typical components include mineral-oil-based paraffins and synthetic glycerides. Plant fats and oils (cocoa butter, almond oil, peanut oil, etc.) and animal waxes (wool wax, beeswax) are also used. Some chemically modified oils are also used due to their longer shelf life and consistency. Emulsifiers are used to stabilise emulsion-like cream structures.

Creams with high water content are susceptible to microbial spoilage and therefore preservatives (sorbic acid, parabens) and perfumes (fragrances) must be added. Creams can also contain antioxidants (butylated hydroxytoluene, α-tocopherol) to protect certain sensitive ingredients against oxidation from the oxygen in the air.

Furthermore, creams may contain humectants, consistency enhancers and spreading agents.

Nowadays, the ingredients used are disclosed on the packaging of cosmetic products in accordance with international guidelines (INCI).

But how do microfibril wipes work? Moistened with water, the microfibril wipe deeply cleanses and gently exfoliates the skin. Practically everyone experiences blemished skin and spots at some point in life - usually as a teenager (85% of adolescents suffer from mild to moderate acne). But the skin disease does not always disappear in adulthood and acne is not unusual even over the age of 25. It is even considered one of the most common forms of abnormal skin changes overall. But notice, it is not about acne when you have a few disturbing spots in your face. Acne means having a large number of spots all over or on a big area of the face. The main cause of acne is the same at all stages of life: a malfunction of the sebaceous glands. The disorder only occurs more frequently in puberty because of the hormonal changes taking place in an adolescent's body. And hormones are responsible for regulating gland activity, among other things. 

TOO MUCH SEBUM BLOCKS THE PORES.

Usually, the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, which causes the gland openings to become blocked. The increased production of corneocytes reinforces this process. Hornifications and sebum build up a plug at the gland opening and a blackhead forms. However, this is not yet considered acne. If bacteria accumulates in the blackhead, inflammation develops and painful, red, often puss-filled spots soon form. The inflammation can easily spread to nearby healthy tissue. Once the condition has spread to a certain degree, the general term «acne» is used to describe this clinical picture. The skin areas of the face, shoulders, chest and back, which are abundant in sebaceous glands, are most affected.

Blemished skin and acne mainly occur due to the following pathophysiological factors:

• Androgens form the end product dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  This is responsible for stimulating the sebaceous glands and promotes the formation of corneocytes on the sebaceous glands. These «horny plugs» prevent sebum from draining off (keratinisation).
• Although acne is not an infectious disease, bacteria is involved in the pathogenesis (abnormal skin changes).
• Sebum is the most important individual acnegenic factor; the severity of the acne is directly proportional to the size and number of active sebaceous glands.
• Sebaceous gland function is regulated hormonally, primarily by androgens, which is why the effect of hormones plays a decisive role

The basis for successful treatment is diagnosis: it may therefore make sense to have a consultation with a dermatologist or in a pharmacy. Diagnosis is important because allergies and skin rashes can have similar characteristics to acne. In addition to external features, the following considerations may also be helpful: has the affected person recently started using a new detergent? This could indicate an allergic reaction. Or does the person have other physical symptoms? The skin gives many indications about what may be wrong with other parts of the body.

TREATING THE AFFECTED AREA.

Acne does not occur because of a lack of hygiene. Nevertheless, clean skin is a requirement for successful treatment. Pore-deep cleansing of the skin and removing excess dead skin cells are the basis for successful treatment. Aggressive soaps are not suitable as they cause additional skin irritation. Products containing alcohol should also be avoided as they dry out the skin. Although this can bring about promising short-term results, the condition usually worsens as soon as the product is discontinued and usually becomes even worse than before. After cleansing, the skin must be supplied with specific, targeted, nourishing active ingredients that soothe the sebaceous glands and regulate their activity. Oily creams should be avoided in all cases, as they block pores.
